Let’s face it, pilots just need options. The more options the better and
having the ability to switch to a backup for both communications and
navigation in one device, that weighs just over 1 pound, can become the most
important primary option that a pilot needs to have on board.
Although a few hand-held
transceivers may have V-O-R navigation capability, the Sporty’s SP-400 is
the only fully integrated hand-held transceiver with not only V O R
capability but also offers both glide slope and localizer features to shoot
I-L-S and localizer approaches in the event that you lose aircraft power for
the onboard avionics.
During instrument flight
rule conditions, and especially at night, pilots need these options more
than anything else. I-F-R and nighttime conditions present a formidable
environment for the pilot, especially if they have no means of communicating
with A-T-C, turning on the runway lights by keying the microphone and having
the ability to actually get down to the ground safely via an I-L-S, V-O-R or
Localizer approaches.
The SP-400 not only
provides horizontal and vertical approach guidance for an I L S, it also
provides approach guidance for a V O R and even a localizer. The best part
of the SP-400 is that you do not have to select which navigation aid you
want to use. Depending on what frequency you enter for a V O R, I L S or
localizer navigation aid, the SP-400 will automatically determine what type
of navigation aid screen to display, based solely on the frequency you
enter.
The Sporty’s SP-400
hand-held navigation and communication radio was designed by pilots for
pilots. So, you can expect many important radio features that a pilot
actually needs when they are reaching in the flight bag for an emergency
navigation and communications backup device.
